Surgical Eye Lift

The eyes are the gates to the soul. And thus one of the first things you or someone else notices about your appearance. When they are hidden behind drooping eyelids, it is time to undergo eyelid surgery.

Drooping eyelids are mostly genetic. Whereas some people have a permanently open gaze, others unfortunately suffer from overhanging upper eyelids and/or thickened lower eyelids. Initially, it is often aesthetics that bothers one, but as the eyelids ‘close’ the eye further and further, the problem goes from aesthetic to medical. Either the eyelids obstruct vision, making it more difficult to see or the drooping eyelids cause frequent muscle tension and forehead pain due to the constant ‘pulling up’ of the eyelids.

The why and when of eyelid surgery?

As described above, the eyelid problem can be aesthetic but also medical. Many times, the aesthetic aspect is the preliminary stage of the medical aspect. At Mommy Skincare Clinic, we thus offer several options for eyelid surgery. Whereas for slightly overhanging eyelids the eye lift without surgery can be used initially, for more profusely overhanging eyelids it is advised to have an eyelid correction carried out by one of our (plastic) surgeons. This can be both cosmetic and medical. Naturally, our surgeons will tell you which options are available during an non committing consultation, and the treatment will be designed and scheduled in consultation with you.

The surgical eyelid correction

Surgical eyelid correction has 2 options, upper eyelid correction and lower eyelid correction. In which the upper eyelid correction is the most common eyelid correction. The lower eyelid correction is a slightly more complex procedure than the upper eyelid correction.

Upper eyelid surgery

Eyelid surgery on the upper eyelid is a common (surgical) procedure in which the excess skin of the eyelid is removed, lifting the eyelid. During the 30-40-minute procedure, the treating doctor will initially mark out the area and then anaesthetise it. After the anaesthetic takes effect, the doctor will make a small incision in an oval shape in the arcade arch. The excess skin is thus cut away. Where necessary, the attending physician will also remove any excess fat, after which the blood vessels are cauterised and the eyelids are sutured to achieve the best possible result.

Lower eyelid surgery

The lower eyelids tend to suffer from both excess skin and fat accumulation. Similar to the upper eyelid correction, the doctor or surgeon will first numb the skin. After the anaesthetic has taken full effect, a small incision will be made to remove the excess skin and the underlying fat. The surgeon does this in such a way that the lower eyelid will have a natural appearance again after the eyelid correction. After removing the excess skin and underlying fat, the blood vessels are cauterised and the skin is reconnected using a fine suture technique.

After both upper eyelid surgery and lower eyelid surgery, the eyes are temporarily cooled to prevent swelling.

Preparation for Eyelid surgery

We recommend taking Arnica drops at least 2 weeks in advance to partially prevent swelling and bruising. Before coming to the clinic for the eyelid surgery, we recommend that the eyes are clean and free of make-up. We also recommend removing fake eyelashes prior to treatment due to infection risk. Prior to the eyelid correction, our practitioners naturally take care of disinfecting the eyelids.

Aftercare eyelid surgery

We recommend not going home on your own after both upper eyelid surgery and lower eyelid surgery.

After returning home, the eyes can be cooled to counteract any residual swelling. Sports or intensive exercise are strongly discouraged.

As an extra service, we offer a treatment package including 6 Manual Lymph Drainage treatments to massage away the fluid after surgery to speed up the recovery process.

The swelling and discolouration will disappear within one to two weeks, after which the stitches will also be removed during a follow-up appointment at Mommy Skincare Clinic.

Eyelid surgery before and after: the results you can expect

Our doctors and surgeons are specialists in their field and go for optimal, natural results. By removing exactly the right amount of skin, they know how to restore clarity and openness to the eyes. Although the result of surgery is immediately visible, after any swelling and discolouration has ebbed away, the final result will be visible after about four weeks.
